Description
A diagnosis, a change in vision, or a long wait between appointments can leave a person with a question that medicine cannot always answer right away: What will happen next? Ophthalmology can measure, monitor, and treat the eye. It rarely addresses what happens inside the person while they wait.
Internal Vision grew out of that gap. Over more than thirty years as a physician, psychotherapist, and Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, Dr. Vadim Dekhtyar saw a pattern again and again. People living with retinal conditions were often affected as much by the future they imagined as by the condition itself. Fear filled in what had not yet happened. Predictions began to shape daily life, and the world gradually grew smaller. He also recognized the pattern in himself, from his own experience of uncertainty about his vision.
He wrote this book to offer something practical: a way to stay in relationship with your own life while the outcome is still unknown. It does not promise a cure, and it does not replace medical care. Its purpose is to help readers respond differently to uncertainty and to keep participating in the life that is still theirs.
The book introduces Internal Vision, the capacity to maintain three things when the future is unclear:
• Clarity: telling what is known from what is only predicted.
• Regulation: influencing your emotional and physical response.
• Stability: regaining your balance when fear comes back.
Along the way, readers learn:
• how an emotional reaction builds from a single worrying thought;
• how the pictures and inner voices we carry shape our expectations;
• how ideas borrowed from other people can behave like “Thought Viruses”;
• how to separate who you are from what you are facing;
• how to distinguish what you can influence from what you cannot, using the Circle of Participation.
Each part includes simple, repeatable tools, including the five-step SIGHT process, an Internal Vision Profile, and a 30-day practice. Readers can use them alone or alongside their medical care.
Internal Vision is written for people living with retinal conditions and vision-related uncertainty, and for family members and clinicians who want to understand what that uncertainty feels like from the inside.
